HP LaserJet Pro M252dw is an entry-level colour laser printer suitable for small offices printing between 250 to 2,000 pages per month. It prints at up to 18ppm with a first page out time of around 11.5 seconds, and you can also print duplex at speeds of up to 11 sides per minute. The main selling point for a machine like this is the connection options available for the price. There’s the USB and network connectivity that we all know and love, as well as built in Wi-Fi capabilities, so if you have a wireless router, you can connect this device to your network without any cables. You can also take advantage of mobile printing solutions with this device, and print using things like Apple’s AirPrint and HP’s ePrint.
This flexibility makes it popular with small business and people working from home. It also means that it’ll integrate into pretty much any working environment. In terms of print quality, it’s definitely not suitable for outbound marketing material, as it can only print up to a resolution or 600 x 600 dpi, something normally round in small mono laser printers. So if you’re looking for a colour laser for graphics and imagery, this isn’t the machine for you. For internal documents and letters though, this device is great. The paper handling is actually quite impressive, considering the price point. The maximum paper capacity is around 150 sheets from the main tray, and there’s a multipurpose feeder above this for things like thicker media and envelopes.
What impresses us is the ability to print on HP glossy laser paper, weighing up to 220gsm. It’s clear that there’s great paper handling across the entire LaserJet Pro range, but as this device is limited to 600 x 600 dpi, we don’t think you’d be printing on glossy media very often. The consumables for this printer come preinstalled when you buy it, and the replacement toners are available in two different yields. The standard yield offers up to 1,400 pages for colour and 1,500 pages for black, Whilst the higher yield cartridges give up to 2,300 pages for Cyan, Magenta and Yellow, and up to 2,800 pages for black. Knowing this, we recommend the higher yield toners. Even if you had this printer maxed out at 2,000 pages per month, you’d still go a full month without changing any consumables.
The larger toners also end up saving you money, as they make for a lower cost per page, and a much lower total cost of ownership. Living with the printer isn’t a chore, as there’s a 7.6cm colour touch screen display that allows you to easily access all the printer’s menus and the NFC capability allows printing from mobile devices with tap to print. To sum up, it’s a compact colour laser, perfect for small businesses, and offices printing up to 2,000 pages per month. By no means great at graphics like others bearing the mark LaserJet Pro, it still has a place in the range, as the good little workhorse that’s easy to get along with.
