OKI MC873DN Printer Review

OKI MC873DN Driver
OKI MC873 is an A3 MFP or multifunction printer, offering brilliant print quality and a huge range of features, perfect for busy offices with up to 30 users, printing up to around 10,000 pages per month. This time I will review MC873 DN model, there’s also a DNCT and a DNV model available, as well as various accessories like extra trays and stands, so no matter what your needs, there’ll be a combination perfect for you.

At the top of the machine there’s a 100 sheet RADF, which stands for reversing automatic document feeder. This scans one side of a page, flips it, and then scans the other. Scanning duplex in a single pass would theoretically be quicker but this scanner has speeds of up to 50 sides per minute, so it’ll most likely be a vast improvement on what you’re used to. The flatbed scanner underneath gives great looking scans, especially with awkward media like receipts or magazines, and like the RADF, it’ll scan up to A3, so large documents are not an issue.

You can save scans in PDF, TIFF, JPEG and XPS formats, as well as high compression PDF and secure PDF formats. It’ll copy at up to 35 copies per minute, with a first page out in around 10 seconds. The interface is easy to use thanks to the large 7 inch touch screen display, shortcut buttons, and numeric keypad. Pretty much all of the printers functions can be accessed from here, like direct scanning to USB devices, faxing, and secure printing.

Moving on to paper handling, this machine has two paper trays as standard, with the option for additional trays. The multipurpose feeder can hold up to 100 sheets of standard office paper, or paper weighing between 60 and 256gsm, allowing for envelope printing, and really nice prints on quality media. Especially as you can print banners up to 1.3m long. The main tray is capable of handling up to 300 sheets of standard office paper, or paper weighing between 60 and 220gsm, perfect for a wide range of documents. If a 400sheet paper capacity isn’t enough for you, you can always add an extra tray, or go for either the DNCT or DNV options.

This machine prints at up to 35ppm for A4 and 20ppm for A3. Good performance for any office environment, and this machine in particular has proven to be a dependable workhorse. Oki Printers are not laser printers, like many people think. Rather than lasers, Oki use LED lights. These LED printers, have fewer moving parts and ultimately present fewer problems in day to day operation. This machine ships with starter toner cartridges that can be replaced with standard yield toners offering 7,000 pages for black and 7,300 for colour. But you want the lowest cost per page available, you’d best opt for the larger, high yield cartridges. These offer up to 10,000 pages for colour, and 15,000 pages for black. These huge toners drive the cost per copy down, resulting in a lower total cost of ownership, but they reduce the frequency of what Oki call, user intervention. This basically means, the time you spend replacing toner. Obviously if the cartridges last longer, then you spend less time messing about, and more time being productive. I really do like this machine, it’s big, it’s serious, and it’s a workhorse. A great quality A3 printer capable of producing 10,000 beautiful pages per month, over and over and over again, without missing a beat. And to top it off, it has a built in stapler.
